Dandelion Wine, Part One

Collect one gallon of dandelion blossoms, being careful to pick only the yellow petals.

  1. So how does one collect only the yellow petals? I've always wondered about this because my parents made dandelion wine when I was little (my ancient cookbook has a recipe, too), but every dandelion I've ever picked has a casing of green fronds.

  2. You hold the casing in one hand, and pull the petals with the other, as best you can. It doesn't matter if a little bit of green gets in, but you don't want a lot of it. It's slow work. I timed myself one year, and it took me two hours to gather one gallon--this in a yard where the blooms are cheek-by-jowl.
